Always with the Binoculars!

My first earth-shattering revelation regarding Airfix's 1/32 scale soldiers is this.

Almost all officers are depicted clutching a pair of binoculars. Obviously this excludes any officers from the Napoleonic, Medieval or Western ranges. So let's say that most 20th century officers are made to differ from the rank and file by this small piece of equipment.

Jungle troops also seem to have this item omitted, the Japanese and Australian officer have a sword and machete, the Ghurka officer is content with a pistol.

OK, let me correct my earlier statement. Most 20th century officers based in the European or African theatre of operations differ from their subordinates courtesy of the inclusion of 'field glasses' to give them their proper name.

This convention can also be seen among a number of other 1/32 scale figure manufacturers, I have some ESCI Germans that have binocular wielding COs.

More exciting news from the world of toy soldiers to follow.
(I need to get out more).

Not quite Mid-life crisis.

This blog is my first and will be the ramblings of a 30-something's growing obsession with a toy from his childhood. I have attempted in the past to justify the purchasing of these small plastic figures as something my 2 young boys will love to play with. The Missus isn't buying it (actually I'm buying them, she is just shaking her head in disappointment).

So it begins!
